Hi all, so I’ve been enjoying my forced holiday ……. not! Too much borat
I’ve seen many of my friends leave, there are very few people left that I am friends with and it feels very sad.
NOVA had around 10 companies bidding to sponsor it and they choose the sponsor yesterday – G Communications. It’s a little English school in Hokkaido. They look set to open 30 schools with the aim to eventually open 200…. no one knows when. There has been no mention of money for the teachers or refunds for the students. It looks like the teachers will need to get 80% of back wages from the govt, this should take around 6 months at least. The students will get a discount on future lessons at the “New Nova” 75% off the price. Looks like most instructors will now be officially unemployed and students have lost thousands of dollars each….. this is a pretty shitty deal all the way around. I have no idea if I still have job (probably not). I think the government trustees are going to have a meeting tomorrow to clarify the situation because right now most of this is speculation and the details are fuzzy. I have to make a decision that looks more and more like I will be leaving the country for good ….. I just wish someone would give us some answers.
I should also add that NOVA has been in the press constantly for the past 2 weeks- some people are angry at the teachers and blame them for what has happened and some people have taken to buying random foreigners food. There is also a program set up by the union for teachers to teach students in return for simple meals. There was a report on NHK a few weeks ago that pitied the students as the genuine victims in this fiasco and not the homeless hungry foreigners…. no one in the Japanese community batted an eyelid at this but the on-line foreigner community was certainly a wee bit angry at this. I’m feeling seriously unloved by my host country.
